The top anticipated movies of 2018

Karen Soriano and Adam Vanderlinden

The new year has started, and with it, Hollywood waits to release an average of 700 movies, compared to about a decade ago when the average was 400. Some of the great movies already anticipated are Avengers: Infinity War, The Purge: The Island, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Aquaman, and Ready Player One, but there are still hundreds of movies you may never hear about. Some examples would be independent movies or self made documentaries; some new documentaries include Jane, City of Ghosts, and Long Strange Trip.

Black Panther: Black Panther springs into action when an old enemy threatens the fate of his nation and the world.

Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom: Four years after the destruction of the Jurassic World theme park, Owen Grady and Claire Dearing return to the island of Isla Nublar to save the remaining dinosaurs from a volcano that’s about to erupt. They soon encounter terrifying new breeds of gigantic dinos while uncovering a conspiracy that threatens the entire planet.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald: Magizoologist Newt Scamander joins forces with wizard Albus Dumbledore to battle the devious Gellert Grindelwald in 1920s Paris.

Avengers: Infinity War: Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.

Solo: A Star Wars Story: The early adventures of young Han Solo, Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian.

Aquaman: Aquaman finds himself caught between a surface world that ravages the sea and the underwater Atlanteans who are ready to revolt.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix: Mystique, Beast, Storm, Nightcrawler and the rest of the X-Men spring into action when a malevolent, power-hungry force threatens to overtake Jean Grey’s mind.

The Incredibles 2: Elastigirl springs into action to save the day, while Mr. Incredible faces his greatest challenge yet — taking care of the problems of his three children.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure: Thomas leads some escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions that the Gladers have been asking since they arrived in the maze.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Ant-Man joins forces with the Wasp on an urgent new mission to uncover secrets from the past.

These movies may lose importance and relevance as the year goes on as most of these movies have a release date later in the year, however they are among the most talked about now. Some of the top movies that won’t be coming out util later in the year include Aquaman on December 21st and Fantastic Beasts on November 16th.

All of the movies are spaced throughout the year, but the majority begin after the school year ends.
The top movies of 2018 will be those of the major companies, superhero and fantasy movies will be among the biggest and most popular. For example, the Star Wars franchise is currently number 3 on the overall worldwide gross income list at $2.825 billion, only being beaten out by Avatar at $2,787,965,087 and Gone with the Wind at $1,804,258,510 with adjustments for inflation. Another example is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they have made 13.4 billion dollars with their 17 movies.
