Time passes, sitting at your desk with your head feeling heavy with thoughts and sleep. The only thing that has your mind occupied is how many more minutes till the bell rings. Others might have their minds occupied with talking with friends, fidgeting, and having the urge to listen to music rather than listen to the lecture.
From students to sources, the lack of concentration is great, and the interest that students have in classes and school is incurious. Absence of sleep, the need for energy, and the cravings for focus is immense.
Students starting high school may not be used to the new sleeping schedule, waking up at 5 to 6 AM to get ready for classes that start at 7:30 AM. That can take a while to get used to. Meanwhile, students who have developed a good sleep routine still struggle to focus in class.
“In the subject math, I just don’t understand sometimes what it means and what I have to do.” Says Alexis Duran a Senior, and also according to HealthLine when students find a subject boring, or the teacher that causes them to fall asleep.
Alexis Duran continues to say “I just stay up learning about cars on google.” Staying up late can also cause a lack of concentration since you fall asleep late, wake up early and head to school, with your head still filled with sleep.
The heads of the students are filled with boredom and confusion since the teacher is teaching too fast and isn’t slowing down eventually leading to distractions.
Distractions tend to come from friends physically and digitally such as talking and social media. Some students can fight the urge not to check their phones and to hold back on talking to their friends, fidgeting with toys and their ears filled with music. What concentration would they have if they were doing things like this?
“Usually fidgeting with a toy and having music playing on low volume in my ear.” said Mani Plancarte Garcia, an 11th-grade student, when he’s not focused in class.
But on the other hand distractions can not only come from friends and phones, but also from struggle with mental health issues.
According to Oxford Learning, some students may also have learning difficulties such as Dyslexia, ADHD, and ADD. Having this mental difficulty causes you to lose focus in class by talking a lot, losing focus, being too fidgety and is always restless, therefore that can make you lose focus in your school work based on what KidsHealth stated.
Let’s say you had an opportunity to focus in class and you took it, would that result in a change for your future of studying, and concentration?
Mani Plancarte Garcia says “I guess not, I don’t think. I already focus quite well”. This might not imply to everybody but some.
Additionally having a “Favorite topic” or a class you like can boost up concentration. According to Abdul Mueez, a freshman, “I focus on my Spanish class because it’s a fun class and a really fun language to learn”. But having a favorite topic isn’t enough to stay on track. “It’s normally if the teacher is fun and not mean or boring and if the environment is a fun one where I’m filled with fun and interesting people who know what they’re doing, and actually do work. ” says Abdul Mueez.
It’s very crucial for students attending high school to put at least a little effort into getting better sleep and whatever it is to help them concentrate in class. Having little to no concentration can make life more difficult. It can possibly ruin your chances of getting a job, or a home and most importantly to take advantage of having a wonderful education.
