While growing up, many students woke up early in the morning to watch their favorite cartoons—Spongebob, Tom and Jerry, Bob the Builder, etc. But in the future, these cartoons we know and love might change forever. New AI shows have no thought or emotion to them. The editing and drawings are unfinished or just scuffed.
Art is a man-made creation that is built on many different things whether it’s emotion, landscape, sculpture, building, etc. Art has made history throughout it’s years since it was first created.
However, in early to late year of 2020, AI became a very popular tool. AI was able to create, music, essays, 3D models, and especially Art. Through the use of AI, art was created, and many people agree that it made the art career a lot easier than before.
In this article, the author makes claims about AI helping artists, “You can use AI to create the basic piece by using prompts or samples of original works. Or you can use AI to assist you in modifying, editing, or improving the work you initially created on your own.”
Although AI was able to do many things with fine arts, there started to be problems, especially in the community. Jobs are being taken away, art is being stolen by AI, and many careers for creative fine arts are becoming more difficult than usual.
There is a difference between AI and people making fine arts. For example, skill level-wise, AI is hard to use and is an excellent skill and is very impressive for some people but artists who have worked on fine arts for years think otherwise.
“Ai is not a skill, it sucks out the time and passion it takes to make art. There is no emotion to it and it is just typing in a computer, nothing more,” said Robert Eberly (Ceramics teacher) who has worked for years making art with students. A lot of people, and artists, hate the fact that AI takes the passion out of fine arts.
Another thing that AI does is steal artwork. How AI creates art is not by doing the art itself, but by searching through the internet and stealing artwork created by people who have worked hours, maybe even days to finish their piece only for it to be stolen by AI which mixes their hard-worked piece into something else.
It is completely unfair to those who put so much effort and thought into their pieces that everyone can see on social media to be completely stolen without the artist’s permission.
“It’s horrible how someone’s art can be taken so easily and made into something else completely by AI. If my art was stolen by AI, I would be angry and disappointed,” said Emily Patterson (12th-grade, senior)
Art is not the only thing that AI has been taking away from artists, AI has been taking away their jobs as well. Since AI has been easy to use and costs less money, movie productions have been letting go of animators, storyboard artists, and anything to do with fine arts.
Gracie Tiption (12th-grade, senior) said, “The fact that people are losing their jobs over an AI makes me angry for the many artists who have spent years learning art only for their jobs to be taken away.” this shows how upsetting it is to hear that art careers are getting harder to keep and even have because many companies are using AI instead.
But on this TikTok page, animators from everywhere are fighting to keep artists’ jobs and fight AI so people can enjoy making art again and having the jobs to be paid. The page also shows how not just animators can help, but anyone else outside of the art community, like you and me.
Ultimately, AI shouldn’t be the ones to create fine art. Humans create better pieces and better animation instead of AI. People put more emotion, thought, and effort into their art instead of stealing and making something new.
